Someone has led this child to believe
The butter-colored folder with âRegina Louiseâ hand-printed on the tab lay on the desk in the small office where the house parents slept. It seemed a contradiction to call the hired help house parents. They were paid $5 an hour to meet the state-required ordinance of having us, as property of the state, supervised. Honestly, I wouldâve preferred Barbara or her motherâs caretaking. They had good intentions, those two.
The lady on duty, Ms. Jardinière, a Geechee-speaking woman from South Carolina, busied herself with doing laundry. She was one to sit out in the atrium, dip snuff, and spit it out to the tune of the dryer cycle as the clothes and sneakers tumbled and thumped their way to dry. If the dryer beat the washer, sheâd switch to chewing on ice chips or rocks of powdered starch to bide her time while folding sheets, linens, towels. I knew I had time to read the entire file if I wanted. I didnât waste any of it.
This file wasnât as thick as the one Iâd found at Guideways. Most of the contents were on official pleading papers, and there were a few letters. I read the most recent one from Guideways.
